A New Look for an Already Great Site
Desiring God has a new web site design. It is similar to the old one, but is much more user friendly in my opinion. I thought the old one was too busy. This one makes finding things much easier!

Nicholas, I know this question is off topic but what did you make of Phil Johnson’s sermon at the recent Shepherd’s Conference where he attacked Mark Driscoll and others for using what he described as filthy talk in the pulpit? Further what do you make of John Piper’s very public endorsements of Driscoll’s ministry?
Ian,
I have not yet had a chance to listen to it. I will do so as soon as possible. I think there is probably some validity to Johnson’s criticism. Mark Driscoll does push things to the limit at times. The Scriptures are crystal clear that no corrupt speech should come from our mouths.
That being said, I think Driscoll is often trying to say things that the Scripture says in order to show that the Bible is not as “neat and clean” in its language as some would like to make it. The Bible describes Israel’s harlotry in terms of a “lusty horse.” God says that Israel’s righteousness is like “menstral rags.” Paul says that his good works are equal to “animal crap.” In order to capture the extreme nature of the language it seems appropriate–especially in the context in which Driscoll is working–to use extreme language.
All in all, I think it is a very difficult subject to approach. I would not want to be all critical of Driscoll, but I am not without some complaint in regard to his speech. I think Piper likes Driscoll for many of the same reasons I would. I am thankful for Mark Driscoll’s ministry and his boldness to proclaim God’s word faithfully, and I think he has become more and more Reformed in many ways.
Hope this helps!
It certainly does help and I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.
On a more positive note I understand you were recently ordained to the ministry and I would like to take the opportunity to wish you God’s richest blessings in that great work.
I speak as a fellow pastor.
