Tom Schreiner on N.T. Wright’s Surprised by Hope
Here is Tom Schreiner’s review of Wright’s Surprised by Hope. I would encourage anyone interested in Wright to read this review.
You can also find many of Schreiner’s articles online here. I would especially recommend Did Paul Believe in Justification by Works? Another Look at Romans2, Paul and Perfect Obedience to the Law, Was Luther Right? , and The Fulfillment of the Law
On the recommendation from a friend, I just read this book and found it to be good overall. However, I do agree with most of Tom Schreiner’s comments. On a different note, am I the only one that feels the title “Surprised by Hope” was a bit awkward and contrived? Was it a coincidence that this book hit the market shortly after Barack Obama’s wildly successful book “Audacity of Hope” or was the title a product of clever marketing strategy? If it introduces non-Christians to Christianity, then I guess it is a good thing. Moreover, all authors and publishers need to stay in business by boosting their potential audience and sales/royalites with catchy titles. After all the publisher, HarperOne, is not a charity.
