Hymns of the Christian Faith Series

Beginning June 19th, New Covenant Presbyterian Church will begin a Sunday School series on the hymns of the faith, “Tell Me the Old, Old Story: A History of the Hymns and Hymn Writers of the Christian Faith.” Following the example of Ligon Duncan and Derek Thomas, we will consider the history, theology and arrangements of some of the most well known hymns in the Christian church. In preparation for this series, I asked Paul Jones what he considered to be the more trustworthy and helpful resources dealing with the stories behind the compositions of great hymns. The following are some of the more resources Dr. Jones has recommended, or that I have come across:

A Dictionary of Hymnology ed. John Julian.

Richard Mouw and Mark Noll, ed. Wonderful Words of Life

John Brownlie The Hymns and Hymn Writers of the Christian Hymnary

Samuel Woolcock Christophers Hymn-Writers and Their Hymns

John Gadsby Memoirs of the Principal Hymn-Writers
