Paul Helm on the Phenomena of Scripture

Paul Helm has written a very important article on the phenomena of Scripture as taught by Charles Hodge and B.B. Warfield. The significance of this article lies in the fact that recently these two Reformed theologians have been used to support a call for the necessity of extra-biblical materials, namely ancient Near Eastern literature (ANE), in the interpretation of Scripture. The term ‘phenomena’ can be used in different ways. Those who would assert the necessity of studying extra-biblical materials would use the word ‘phenomena’ to define that material. But there is a historic sense in which the term was used of the evidences internal to Scripture itself. This is the way Hodge and Warfield used the term. Helm has demonstrated this in his usual masterful manner. You can read the article here.
